I Am Angel
And I am witness
I braved a righteous life
To one day merit rest from strife
And on that sacred night I passed
From that dark sphere where mortals roam
He came to me, the First and Last
I reign now from a marble throne
For I am angel
And I am witness
I know the weight within your eyes
He tread the garden
Feeling heavy
Heavy feeling garden growth
As he tread to keep his oath
Crumpled soon 'neath branding blade
A tattoo blazed upon his soul
Depicts the souls for which he paid
A blinding agony the toll
For he is Savior
And I am witness
I, tasked to comfort as he dies
I peered within
I hesitated
For I saw my righteous life
Etched on his face by rugged knife
I saw the pain my soul induced
Bloom red and cascade down his side
From holy lives I'd so abused
Before I gained some sense and died
They name me angel
But He is witness
My name and title are my lies
Thus he wept
And I cried
Because these arms have caused more harm than help
They reached inside
And as he writhed
I pushed his blood out through his pores
I held him, King and Christ
I was His demon within
I was His angel without
A good excuse
Will salted tears cause him more pain?
Do shaking hands drive him insane?
Through twisted knots of muscles burning
Working through an endless fire
Of shame and hate and doubt all churning
Rose his response from gut on higher
To his lungs and then his throat
The words of God on silence broke
He whispered, "Thank you. You're doing fine."
I am Angel
And I am witness
So let me tell you why we'll rise
